If the EPUB has no fixed print pagination, the tool starts with an estimated page count and lets you replace it with the page total shown by your own reader.

Progress in context

How the progress estimate works

The Reading tool gives you a sense of a book's length and time commitment before you start. Each title includes word count and estimated reading minutes, based on an average reading speed.

Estimates are based on the text length and are meant to be a guide, not a guarantee. Your actual reading time may vary. The catalog includes many short pieces, perfect for a quick read, as well as longer works for when you have more time.

Word Count

The median word count is 9,376 words. Most titles (81) are under 10,000 words, but there are also longer works, up to over 86,000 words.

Reading Time

The median reading time is 41 minutes. Quick reads (under 30 minutes) make up 81 titles, while immersive reads (over 2 hours) account for 10.

Length Categories

Books are classified as short, medium, long, or epic. For example, 'The Metal Monster' is epic at 86,484 words, whereas 'Inconstancy' is short at 4,973 words.

Reading Tracker Guide

Planning Progress, Page by Page

The Reading Tracker records your progress in pages, not sections or minutes. It asks for the current page, total pages, and a daily page goal, then estimates how many days remain. This page-based approach works with any edition, because you can adjust the total to match your own book.

For books without a fixed catalog page count, the tracker estimates pages by dividing the word count by 250 words per page. That is a useful default, but it is only an estimate—your actual page count may differ.

Setting a Realistic Daily Goal

The default daily goal is 20 pages, which suits a typical reading session. For a short story like "The leaf — Key Ideas to Explore" (id 266), with an estimated word count of 4,689, that translates to about 19 pages (4,689 / 250 = 18.756, rounded up). At 20 pages a day, you would finish in roughly one day.

For a longer work, the goal matters more. "Null-ABC — Reading Companion" (id 219) is about 38,457 words, or 154 pages (38,457 / 250 = 153.828). At 20 pages a day, that is 8 days (154 / 20 = 7.7, rounded up to 8). If you prefer a lighter pace, you can lower the goal; if you have more time, raise it.

Adjusting to Your Edition

The tracker's page estimate is a starting point. If your reading app or printed edition shows a different total page count, you can replace the estimate with that number. This keeps your progress accurate regardless of font size, margins, or formatting.

The estimated remaining time is proportional: it multiplies the estimated reading minutes by the fraction of pages remaining. For "The leaf", if the estimated minutes are 21 and you have 10 pages left out of 19, the remaining time is about 11 minutes (21 × 10 / 19). This calculation updates as you log pages.

Tracking Without an Account

Progress history is stored in your browser's localStorage, so no account is required. This means your data stays on your device, but it also means it will not sync across browsers or devices. If you switch computers, your progress will not follow you unless you manually note it.

The tracker does not record sections or minutes as progress—only pages. That is a deliberate design choice, keeping the focus on a simple, consistent unit. For a book with many text sections, like "Pellucidar — A Reader’s Guide" (id 215) with 18 sections, you can still track by pages, pausing at section breaks as you wish.
